What Makes GREAT Honey
HONEY TODAY: The “truth” about honey, what everyone should know about honey bought in stores today, and why it all tastes the same.
First, most large beekeepers who make a lot of honey sell large quantities to honey packers. The honey packing companies may resell it under their company name or repackage their “blend” and sell it to food manufacturers to use in their products. The honey packers will blend various types of honey together to achieve a particular color and appearance. Appearance is important because, in grocery stores, you shop with your eyes. Therefore, the honey must look amazing and clear and be a beautiful color to appeal to the visual sense of the consumer. The honey in grocery stores and discount warehouses has been overheated, filtered, and blended to look nice, but sadly, after all of that processing, it has little to no nutritional value remaining in it. Any important pollen, enzymes, and amino acids are cooked and filtered out.
The second dilemma today is that many packing companies import honey produced in other foreign countries. These companies bypass the US beekeeper and bring imported low-cost, foreign-made honey. Consumers have no idea that the honey they purchase comes from another country and may have never been tested or inspected. The honey packers mix foreign honey and profit more from this inferior honey being brought into the USA. No one knows exactly what this “honey” is comprised of. There may be added sugars, fructose, sucrose, or rice syrup added to the “honey.” It may have unwanted and unsafe additives, antibiotics, and chemical residues. One known thing is that it is inexpensive and inferior to what beekeepers in the USA produce. The US beekeeper is held to a very high standard and is required to have the honey they produce pass tests of purity they make and sell. These tests protect the consumer from any added components that may not be favorable or safe.
Many beekeepers make honey from “crops” —this means the honey is produced in fields or orchards planted by and tended to by a farmer (canola, rapeseed, cotton, sunflower, alfalfa, orange blossom, avocado, buckwheat, and even coffee are considered to be crops).
On the other hand, some beekeepers prefer to produce honey from wild sources, away from the influence of ‘crops’ orchards and farms. This wild honey, which can be derived from a variety of sources such as wildflowers, clover, tupelo, fireweed, sage, pine, and Huajilla (aka Guajillo), offers unique health benefits. It’s a fascinating aspect of honey production worth exploring for its potential health advantages.
